Echols Street Development Commercial

Echols Plaza

The city of Prairie View Texas has a long and rich history of community and providing opportunities to disenfranchised peoples in the rural south and beyond. More places of commerce were requested by the city to keep the dollar circulating within the city economy.

Using tilt-wall construction, a robust form is created, the green roof on the south reduces heat gain while a horizontal slid allows rays of light to penetrate deep into the retail space. The planter box integrated into the storefront façade softens the entry as wooden and white stucco "staples" mark each retail space.

Retail Offices are stacked adjacent to each other to achieve the most optimal building footprint. Retail space is oriented to the North for diffused daylight access and the utility spaces are toward the south to create a barrier from the harsh Texas sun for the retail space.

BeDesign

Located in Houston, Tx in the neighborhood of River Oaks and near Montrose this specialty furniture store adds a page to the rich history of commerce along West Alabama street.

The raised storefront creates a frame above the parking, the signage and the peak of the activity inside offer an interactive billboard that can be viewed from a car in the street. As the site was on a street that is very focused on transit by car, the design solution for the retail space was a response to that set of conditions.

The building is raised on columns to allow for parking under the showroom and to increase the cost-effectiveness of the client's land. The second floor's windows allow passersby to view activity inside the store.
